Mental health discourse in our country is limited to those who know and know about psychology and the handful of millennials and Gen Z who are sufficiently awake to understand such things through social media. While the discussion on mental health has improved over the years, people still do not consider it adequate to treat it like any other disease.
In such a case, when a person with voice and influence talks about their experience with mental health, people listen. Recently Aamir Khan’s daughter Ira Khan posted a video on her Instagram talking about depression. She talked about what the first question everyone asks is why one is depressed. She opened up about her battle with depression and didn’t know why she was depressed, but still listed things that could lead to it. While doing so, she revealed that she had been sexually abused by a man she knew when she was 14. When. She revealed that it took her a year to understand that the perpetrator knew what he was doing. But after that, she immediately texted her parents and moved out of that situation.
In the video, she also talked about her parents’ divorce and she was not really impressed by it as they parted ways amicably.
More power to you, Ira. You need a lot of courage to talk about things that can serve as trigger points. All our love to you!
